I'm Not From Tornado Country

I'm not from Tornado Country.

This past weekend I was in Minnesota during some of the recent storms that devastated the Midwest and specifically Joplin, MO and on a smaller scale but still a tragedy, Northern Minneapolis, MN.  It made those tragedies and my concern for people of those areas all the more real.

My mom, infant daughter and I were out running errands - headed for groceries and coffee.  We pulled up to the coffee shop and the door was locked, which confused me (remember I'm not from tornado country, why would a coffee shop be closed in the middle of the day?  Plus it's raining really hard, let me in!!!).  I didn't know we were in a tornado warning.  The barista actually came to the door, opened it, told me they were on lock down and I couldn't come in!  Well, I wasn't that concerned so it didn't really matter to me.  Then the tornado warning sirens started going off.  What I didn't know was that when I got home I'd find out that neighborhoods and businesses just miles from where I was had been ruined by the storm and tornado.

I should have been more scared.

That barista should have let us inside.

But, we "weathered the storm" and my heart goes out to those who lost their homes, loved ones or just have a lot of clean up and repair to do in their lives.

John and Kasey, I've never heard of businesses going on lock down during tornado warnings. We have our share of them here and I can't think of anyone closing their business.

Hmm, well, they said the reason was that they had to move all the customers to the back room and were required to lock the door.  Target did it too, twice.  I've never been around anything like that, so I thought it was interesting...
