Bountiful Baskets Volunteer - Pay It Forward

Have you ever heard of Bountiful Baskets?

It's a really cool organization that is 100% volunteer based and provides fruits and vegetables on a co-op basis.  The way it works is that on Monday at noon for a 24 hour period you can order your basket and any "add ons" (like bread, extra fruit, different vegetables, or whatever is available that week) and then on Saturday you pick it up at whatever location you have signed up for.

Why would you do this instead of going to a grocery store?

Well, for one it's fun!  I love not knowing exactly what I am going to get and it makes me branch out in the fruits and veggies department.

Also, knowing I am getting another basket on the weekend makes me more motivated to eat the produce that I have which makes me a healthier person.

But one of the other great things about it is that it is only $15!  You get quite a lot of food for $15 and the produce is good.

Since it is a volunteer based organization they hope that if you are a regular, you will occasionally put in you time to help.  This past Saturday I volunteered, which entails getting to the site an hour early and helping to distribute the produce and add ons so that when people come to get their baskets they are ready to get.  Then, when people start lining up with their laundry baskets in hand (to pick up the produce) we help check them in and get them to the appropriate place.

It's a lot of fun to volunteer and you get to meet other "Bountiful Basket-ites" which are typically people around your community.  I pick up my basket at a variety of places, but my favorite is Lake Hazel Middle School, which is very close to my home.  So I am meeting people who live around me, helping out a great organization and getting some awesome produce at a great price.

I do wish more of the fruits and vegetables were local, but I also buy local and during certain times of year there is only so much avaialble.  So a great combonation is Bountiful Baskets every other week with fill ins the other weeks of local farmers markets, vendors and greenhouses to get locally what is seasonal.

Check it out - Bountiful Baskets in Boise, idaho.

This sounds like a great program and I love fresh fruits and vegetable and try to always buy fresh and eat them within two days before they lose half their nutrients! Thanks for sharing Kasey and John!

Yes, Kristine, it's pretty cool.  They have it in different areas other than Boise, too but I think all on the west coast.  It's a lot more fun than going to the grocery store, that's for sure :-)
